A Nation as a Brand: Crafting a Country’s Story for the World
How do you craft a narrative big enough for millions of citizens to see themselves in, and clear enough for the world to understand? In our Spotlight Interview, Hon. Amb. Arek Deng, Press Secretary in the Office of the President of the Republic of South Sudan, answers from the centre of government.
Her conversation leads an issue built around one question: who shapes a nation’s story? We examine how AI, search engines and digital platforms are becoming the new authors of national reputation. We recount how Africa challenged the map that made it look small, and won by 164 votes to 1 at the UN General Assembly. We explore how Tanzania and Thailand are evolving two of the world’s most recognisable identities without losing what made them famous. And we ran a side-by-side comparison of the US, China, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania to reveal what truly builds a nation brand.
Thereafter, step inside FELT Africa’s Election Readiness Media Training in Juba, where more than 100 communicators and journalists prepared to inform the public through a high-stakes vote. Then join our Chairman, Dennis Onsarigo, at Africa Global PR Week 2026, where he called on leaders to protect reputations that outlast governments.
The issue closes with a challenge to every government communicator: in a world where everyone publishes, credibility has to be built through accessible information, honest explanation and institutions that act on what they say. It also asks whether governments can tell false information apart from legitimate criticism.
